One person was killed and five others were hurt Wednesday when a car crashed into a Subway sandwich shop at the Apple Valley Mall in Smithfield, Rhode Island.

The car crashed through the front of the store and hit the far wall. The impact damaged the Planet Fitness gym on the other side.

All of a sudden, a huge bang scared the crap out of me honestly, the loudest thing I've ever heard. [I] turned around, smoke coming out of the ceiling, [I] walked closer to see what happened and sure enough, car right through the desk at Planet Fitness,” said Jeffrey Orticier, who was at the gym at the time of the crash.

Smithfield Deputy Fire Chief Steven Quattrini said two people were trapped under the car.

Quattrini said five people went to Rhode Island Hospital and that one was taken to The Miriam Hospital. One person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car was taken to The Miriam Hospital, according to police.

Quattrini said a man in the car came into the parking lot speeding and drove straight into the storefront. He did not know if there was some sort of medical emergency.

The man was the only person in the car.

Workers and customers in the store were hurt.Police have not released the victim's name.

Police said the Subway shop is closed until further notice.

The Planet Fitness is also currently closed.

The cause of the crash and any contributing factors are still under investigation.
