Jannik Sinner vs. Dan Evans: Match Preview

Sinner begins his Asian hard court swing at the China Open on Thursday. This will be his first appearance since the round of 16 lost to Alexander Zverev at the US Open. Zverev emerged victorious in a grueling 4 hour and 41 min five setter which saw the Italian battling cramps. Subsequently, the 22-year old decided to withdraw from the Davis cup.

“Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to recover after the tournaments in America and unfortunately I won’t be able to be part of the team in Bologna,” Sinner announced on social media site ‘X’. Sinner started the year on a successful note as he won the 2023 Open Sud de France in Montpellier, his 7th title. At the Australian Open, he suffered a 4th round defeat at the hands of Stefanos Tsitsipas, in five sets. At the Miami Open, he defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz to reach his second Miami and career Masters final in three years.

The Italian suffered a surprise second-round defeat at the French Open. He reached his first major semi-final at the Wimbledon Championship. Last month, he won his maiden Masters 1000 title at the 2023 Canadian Open in Toronto, defeating Alex de Minaur 6–4, 6–1, for his eighth ATP title.

On the other hand, Dan Evans was part of a heroic comeback for Great Britain in the doubles at the Davis Cup. Great Britain defeated France in front of a packed crowd in Manchester to make their place in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup. The doubles pairing of Dan Evans and Neal Skupski saved four match points before winning a nerve-wracking decider to knock out the arch-rivals France. Evans began his Asian swing at the Chengdu Open, seeded 4th, where he suffered a 4th-round defeat at the hands of Roman Safiullin.

This will be the first encounter between the pair. Sinner holds a much better singles win/loss record for the year – 44/13 compared to Evans’ 17/22.

Jannik Sinner vs. Dan Evans: Match Prediction

Sinner arrives into the tournament fresh as compared to his opponent. The Brit doesn’t hold a particular threat on his serve, which will play right into the hands of Sinner. Meanwhile, Sinner would hope to improve on his serve from the US Open.

To stand a chance of winning the match, Evans would have to put on a flawless groundstroke performance to offset the disadvantage on his serve.

Match Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in straight sets
