FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) — An investigation is now underway after police in California said a baby was found dead in someone's backyard on Tuesday.

Lt. Mike Gebhart, with the Fresno Police Department, said the family who lives in the southeast Fresno home where the baby was found is cooperating with police.

Officers added the baby appears to be a newborn and they still do not know how it got there. However, the family did report it around 6:30 a.m.

Officers had swarmed the area after the call and confirmed the discovery.

According to detectives, they don't believe there's any connection between the family and the baby.

Now, the question remains: How did the baby die? When? Who did this? Why? How long had the baby been there?

You wake up in the morning and you discover that there's a baby in the backyard and you don't how the baby got there," said Richard Aguilar, a neighbor.

Aguilar described the moments before the police tape went up.

He said the family had called him and asked if he could come over to check out if it was a real baby. Aguilar added they know he works in the funeral home industry.

“I determined it was a real baby and then shortly after the police arrived," he said.

He explained the family at the home didn't know what to do. He says they were in shock.

“It's not normal. So, they were in shock. You know, I would say...they were pretty much in shock. At that time, the way I felt, they didn’t know whose baby it was," he said.

Other neighbors said they couldn't understand how somebody could do this to a newborn.

"Honestly, I got goosebumps because it’s shocking to see a baby helpless because they are innocent and no need to go through that," said Felipe Padilla in Spanish.

He also mentioned he feels for the family who had to see such a thing.

Traumatic. I think that is something they will never forget in their entire lives. Never will be forgotten.

Detectives are waiting to get back the autopsy report from the coroner's office.
