Millwall goalkeeper Matija Sarkic tragically passed away at the age of 26. He was on international duty with his national side Montenegro. Although the exact cause of his untimely death is unknown, reports indicate that he fell ill at an apartment in Montenegro.

The 26-year-old’s death triggered shock-waves across the footballing world, as tributes started to pour in. Sarkic became ill while with friends at an apartment in Budva in Montenegro, but efforts to save him were unsuccessful. Just over a week ago, he played for Montenegro against Belgium in a friendly match. He is survived by his family, including his twin brother, Oliver Sarkic, who plays for FK Decic.

Millwall FC announced Sarkic’s passing with deep sorrow. The club used its social media channels to express condolences to his family and friends, requesting privacy for them during this difficult period. Additionally, FA Montenegro, exclaimed that it was pained by the untimely death of the player and offered support to the family. The Professional Footballers’ Association, English clubs Birmingham and Aston Villa and the Football League also offered their sympathies.

Both Sarkic and Oliver played for the Montenegro national team and progressed through all junior categories. The tragic news of Matija’s death comes just months after another young goalkeeper, 17-year-old Naomi Mendoza from the Canary Islands, passed away after weeks in a coma.

26-year-old Montenegrin goalkeeper Matija Sarkic, who passed away this morning, had made 33 appearances for Millwall since joining them in August 2023. He has also made nine appearances for his national side, until his death.

Born in England, Sarkic made his Montenegro debut against Belarus in 2019, making it through the youth stages of the national team. He started out his club footballing career at Anderlecht’s academy before joining Aston Villa in 2015.

Sarkic had loan spells at Wigan, Stratford, Havant, Waterlooville, and Livingston. In 2020, he moved to Wolverhampton. He played 60 games during loan spells at Shrewsbury, Birmingham and Stoke City before joining Millwall last August.
