Dustin Poirier gave one of the best octagon performances of his professional career against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302. The ‘Diamond’ was an underdog going into the fight, but the fighter shocked everyone. Unfortunately, after four rounds of non-stop action, Poirier finally lost via submission against the lightweight champion.

Even after the loss, Dustin Poirier was praised by fight fans for his remarkable grit and fighting spirit. Poirier recently revealed the aftermath of his war with Islam Makhachev. According to the Louisiana native, he shattered his nose and a rib during the fight.

Poirier admitted his nose broke due to an accidental headbutt between both fighters during an exchange. With all the punishment he took, Poirier was able to give it back with a nasty cut over Makhachev’s left eye. However, that was not enough to put down the reigning champion, who pulled out a Tony Ferguson move in the very last round.

Many fans expected Makhachev to keep fighting on the ground all the time. However, the Dagestani was fine with striking against Poirier. Shockingly, Makhachev outlanded Poirier 88-74 in significant strikes. As it turns out, Poirier never got to utilize his game plan against Makhachev.

At UFC 302, it was Dustin Poirier’s third shot at the lightweight title. After getting submitted by both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira in the past, the fighter wanted a different result. Going into the fight, Poirier promised to knock out Islam Makhachev. However, it was far from reality.

After the fight, during the post-fight presser, Poirier went into detail about what happened during the fight, and he came out short.

Honestly, similar to Khabib, his movement is really strange. The timing of it is really strange, to get his cadence. I wanted to open up more and throw more volume, but when he would commit to the pocket, he would exit weird. His dips with his head…His movement is kind of awkward, it’s a weird timing, so I couldn’t get combinations going.

After the fight, Poirier revealed that this might be the last fight inside the UFC octagon. Poirier admitted to being only motivated to win the belt, and everything else just didn’t matter. Nevertheless, even if it’s the truth, that was definitely a good fight to go out of the fight game.
