Post Malone Graduates From Country Covers To Country Single With The Help Of Morgan Wallen

July 2024 · 3 minute read

Two genre-crossing artists and Republic labelmates—Grammy-nominated singer-rapper Post Malone and chart-dominating country singer Morgan Wallen—dropped their collaborative single “I Had Some Help” last May 10. This is Malone’s third joint musical venture in 2024, and with the biggest names in contemporary pop music, no less. The first one was with Beyonce in March (“Levii Jeans” from Cowboy Carter), and the second was a month later with Taylor Swift (“Fortnight” from The Tortured Poets Department).

And it’s already a smashing success. In the first four days of its release, the song already scored almost 45 million U.S. official audio streams and drew over 17 million all-format airplay impressions. Adding to that, it also topped the daily and real-time charts on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, and Pandora. And aside from becoming an instant hit for both artists, “I Had Some Help” also boosted their individual streaming catalogs.

From Country Covers to Country Record

Contrary to popular opinion that Post Malone’s decision to steer into the country genre was a left-field move, it was actually not. The singer was no stranger to the genre as he always had a penchant for it – with the steel guitar playing a classic Hank Williams Jr. riff. He has done quite a list of country covers over the years, like his 2019 Elvis Presley tribute “Blue Suede Shoes” with Blake Shelton and 2021 Texas Benefit performance of Sturgill Simpson’s “You Can Have the Crown.”

Last April 2024, he won over Stagecoach Fest with his Mane Stage performances featuring Dwight Yoakam, Brad Paisley, and Sara Evans. He even hung out with Morgan Wallen onstage and sang their teased duet “I Had Some Help.”

“I Had Some Help”

Post Malone first teased their collaboration with an Instagram clip. It showed him seated with his cell phone as the song played. Wallen sang, “It takes two to break a heart in two,” then Malone continued, “Baby, you blame me, and baby, I’ll blame you.” The video was captioned, “Let’s go with the real mix this time @morganwallen 😂.”

“I Had Some Help” is an upbeat country-pop tune, singing of a breakup. But it’s not the typical country breakup track, drinking beer and drowning their pain away. It talks about how they wanted their partner to take some accountability and that they also had some fault in it.

They sing in the chorus, “I had some help / It ain’t like I can make this kinda mess all by myself / Don’t act like you ain’t help me pull that bottle off the shelf / Been deep in every weekend if you couldn’t tell / They say, ‘Teamwork makes the dream work.’”

Fans expressed how much they loved the song, calling it the collaboration they never knew they needed. Post Malone also received compliments on conquering multiple genres.

Now that it’s out for everyone to listen to, Malone is preparing to release the rest of the songs. He said, “Country record is coming. I keep singing a song that we made while I was in Nashville. It’s so f****** sick, but it’s not out.” So, watch out for that.
But while we wait, let’s take a listen to Post Malone and Morgan Wallen’s “I Had Some Help.”
